Only if you want sensors and timers to work together. Standalone tap timers can connect directly to your phone via Bluetooth, but pairing with the hub unlocks scheduling, weather sync, automatic skip-on-rainfall, and voice control across all devices.
Mechanical timers run a fixed schedule regardless of the weather. RainPoint devices read live conditions — soil moisture, rainfall, temperature — and skip or shorten cycles automatically. RainPoint markets up to 50% reduction in water use vs traditional timers.
Tap timers and sensors run on batteries (3-12 months typical). The hub needs power and Wi-Fi to send commands, but devices remember the last schedule and continue offline. When power returns, everything resyncs automatically.
